Cancer Gene Therapy
The long-term goal of cancer gene therapy is to make cancer a manageable disease, and someday eradicate the disease entirely. The most promising forms of gene therapy in research are:
- Gene proteins delivered directly to the tumor to facilitate cancer cell death
- Medications that boost the immune system to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
- Chemical agents that strangulate cancer cells by cutting off their blood supply, a technique with application to many diseases.
- Vaccines that will ultimately prevent cancer
