Dr. Erkki Ruoslahti is a cell biologist and cancer researcher who has made many seminal contributions in the cell adhesion field. He discovered the arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (RGD) cell attachment sequence, identified several of the first integrins and has elucidated integrin signaling pathways that are involved in anchorage dependence (anoikis).

Recently, Dr. Ruoslahti has made innovative use of libraries of phage-displayed peptides to study the heterogeneity of the vasculature. This technology has revealed an astonishing degree of diversity in the vascular system, including specific markers of tumor vasculature and the vasculature of pre-malignant lesions. The RGD sequence and the new phage-derived homing peptides show promise as targeting elements for drugs and gene therapy vectors.

Dr. Ruoslahti is the author of more than 400 research papers and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine, and a recipient of the 2005 Japan Prize in Cell Biology.
