Dr. Wen-Hwa Lee obtained his PhD in molecular biology at UC Berkeley, served as a professor in UCSD from 1984-1991 and as Alice McDermott distinguished University Professor In University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (1991-2003).

He was the founding director for the Institute of Biotechnology as well as founding chairman for the department of Molecular Medicine (1991-2003). He has relocated to UC Irvine in 2003 as Bren Professor and Department Chair (since 2005).

He is a pioneer in the field of tumor suppressor genes and with others, identified the first human tumor suppressor gene, RB. He has extended his interests to other suppressors including p53, BRCA1 and BRCA2 and made significant contributions to the understanding of these tumor suppressor gene function.

He received several recognitions including Inducted member of Texas Hall of Fame in Sciences, Math and Technology (2003), Presidential Award, Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (2001); F.E. Shideman-Sterling Award, University of Minnesota (1999); Elected Member, Academia Sinica, Republic of China (1994); Alcon Research Award (1994); Outstanding Scientific Achievement in Biosciences, Society of Chinese Bioscientists in America (SCBA) (1992); National Institute of Health Director lectureship (1991).

He served as a review member for NCI Cancer center review committee (1998-2002) and cell biology IRG (1992-1996). He has several research projects funded by NCI and DOD for the past twenty years.
